What is a rip current?
The National Weather Service describes rip currents as channelized currents of water flowing away from shore. They often form near breaks in sandbars and around structures such as jetties and piers.
Do PCB beach flags equal rip-current risk?
Not exactly. Panama City Beach flags communicate current surf-zone hazards as determined by local authorities. Rip-current outlooks are a related but distinct National Weather Service product. A local flag can reflect multiple hazards, not a direct measurement of rip-current speed.
That is why Safe2Swim PCB keeps the official flag as the primary public-safety signal and treats weather, waves and historical patterns as supporting context.
If you are caught in a rip current
Follow National Weather Service guidance: remain as calm as possible, do not try to swim directly against the current, and move in a direction following the shoreline to get out of the current if you can. If you cannot escape, float or tread water and signal for help.
For someone else in trouble, alert a lifeguard or call 911 if no lifeguard is available. The National Weather Service warns against entering the water for an unassisted rescue because rescuers can become victims themselves.
Why St. Andrews visitors should pay attention
Jetties and other coastal structures can influence local currents. A beautiful day, low wind or apparently calm surface does not automatically mean there is no rip-current hazard. Check the posted flag where you actually enter the beach and follow lifeguard instructions.
