Modeling design
The training table uses red-or-worse as the research outcome and environmental features such as wind, gusts, wave height, wave period, swell, tide range and season. Validation is time-aware rather than random so future records are not leaked backward into training folds. A monthly-climatology baseline and a one-day persistence baseline are retained for comparison.
Open data and provenance
Your original ALERTBAY/PCBFLAGS archive remains preserved as the historical source. New observations are appended by automation rather than rewriting those records. Each environmental row is labeled provisional or finalized, and only finalized rows enter the modeling table.
Important limitations
PCB flags apply across Panama City Beach, while the tide and location context is centered near the St. Andrews entrance. ERA5 and ERA5-Ocean are gridded reanalysis products, not instruments sitting on the St. Andrews beach. A flag observation also represents a public hazard decision, not a direct measurement of rip-current speed.
No statistical model on this site should ever be used to override double-red closures or any posted beach flag.
